INTRODUCTION TO LEAN MANUFACTURING
SECTION 1 : INTRODUCTION

1-1 What is Lean Manufacturing?

Introduction Read the introduction to Lean Manufacturing. Then draw a table displaying 1) its origin 2) its field  3) its main key word  4) its main action.
1-2 Background
The Food Industry Read the document. Do Activity1. Then tell your teacher about the 2 major trends in the Food Industry in Australia
Your mission
The tasks Read about your mission and report to the class so as to make sure you can grasp all its ins and outs.

SECTION 2 : THE PROCESS 2-1 Task 1
Class discussion  Let’s look at the concept of waste. What comes to mind when you hear the words ‘workplace waste’? What are some examples of waste in your workplace? How do you go about investigating a waste?

Waste is not always glaringly obvious. One way of identifying if a process is being wasteful is to categorise waste into different types. From this perspective you are searching for a range of ‘hidden’ impacts that a process might be responsible for.

What is waste ? Read the definitions and explain why it is important to categorise the different forms of waste. Justify your answer with a precise example linked to your school life. Then ask for your 8 waste MemoAid
2-2 Task 2
  Investigate group roles

Depending on your experience in the workplace, you will have some idea of the component sectors within your workplace. Essentially these sectors or departments are internal customers to each other. The total process is a system made up of integral parts, and what one sector does has impact on another.

In order to fully appreciate the impact of a waste, the system as a whole needs to be considered. The roles in this activity represent different sectors in the food industry. Each role is made up of the department head. They are:

Production Manager        Warehouse and Distribution Manager      Maintenance Manager      Human Resources Manager

In which of these departments have you had experience?
What are the main responsibilities of these departments?
In groups of three, decide which Manager you would like to be.
View these links to get a broader concept of these positions.
2-3 Task 3
The roles explained Group Role Activities -Here is the brief for the four roles and what is expected of you as an individual group member and as a group. Click on your manager to find out what your role entails.

Production Manager
          Warehouse and Distribution Manager
                    Maintenance Manager
                              Human Resources Manager

2-4 Task 4
  Lean Language and Waste Types

Lean Manufacturing uses a language of its own. It's a good idea to get familiar with some of the terms you hear repeated and understand what they mean.

Here is a Glossary that you can use to record any terminology that you'd like to remember.

There is also a worksheet for you to fill with examples of the 8 wastes. You will probably find it a bit difficult for some of the wastes. Use this knowledge to work on your presentation to the other groups.
