The maintenance manager

The upkeep of machinery and monitoring resources used to run the factories equipment, falls under the jurisdiction of the Maintenance Manager. The demands of general on going preventative maintenance must be balanced against addressing breakdown during production times and general repairs.  The ordering of parts and components for the equipment and the associated warehousing required for them is coordinated by the Maintenance Manager. The employees that report to the Maintenance Manager have expertise in certain disciplines such as Electricians, Plumbers, Fitters and Boiler Makers. The management of their time and how their skills are dispersed through the factory is a major responsibility and ensure that constant production at maximum capacity can be achieved.

The Maintenance Manager is aware that tasks often involve a great deal of excessive motion in procuring tools for repairs of machinery. Three group members will take on the role of the Manager, each using one of the categories of waste to identify possible wastage in the processes. The three waste categories for this sector are:

Motion    Waiting    Defects

As a group member you will first follow the various links on the waste category in order to come back to your other group members to report on your findings:    Describe the waste    What are some examples of it?    Can it impact other departments, if so, how?

Group members will then discuss the waste from your research and brainstorm any of these wastes in your department. Once you have found a waste in your department, give a report on the waste, the type of waste, the impact on the business and the impact if any on other departments of the company. You can report it in terms of effort, time or financial impact. Make a suggestion for a potential solution.

The Links below are provided to your group to ensure that you have tools to conduct such an analysis and assist in the identification process.
