Facebook can ruin your life. And so can MySpace, Bebo…

Indeed, thousands of social network site users have lost their jobs – or failed to get new ones – due to their pages' contents. Police, colleges and schools are browsing MySpace and Facebook pages in search of "inappropriate" content. Both online security holes and users' naivety contribute to causing privacy problems. […]

A recent study released by Viadeo said that two British employers in three now check the Facebook, MySpace or Bebo pages of some applicants, and that 25% had rejected candidates as a consequence. The reasons could be "excess alcohol abuse", ethics and job "disrespect". Viadeo's UK country manager, Peter Cunningham, said the results should deter people from posting personal information online. "The information you leave online can be found via search engines, even if you remove the web page," he said. "When employers who are not intended to see the information find it, it can highly influence their decision."

In America, the checking of social networking sites by employers is now so commonplace that software is being created to automate the process.
